Ook al heeft hij een kast vol met music awards, de Australische singer/songwriter Keith Urban, blijft zichzelf vernieuwen, in een Nashville stijl. Zijn stem heeft alle kenmerken van de moderne country zanger, maar zelf heeft hij iets meer ‘rock n roll’ dan de gemiddelde cowboy. Deze 7e CD heeft genoeg om de rock liefhebber tevreden te stellen en tegelijkertijd de country ballads met het geluid van die elektrische gitaar die het hart van de country liefhebber sneller doet kloppen. Dit is meer dan alleen maar uitgekiende marketing, het past gewoon goed bij elkaar.
Zelden hoor je een track die zo compleet is als die van zijn single “Put you in a Song”, een prachtige mix van rock en country, met gepolijste gitaarstukken en een indrukwekkend chorus.
Opvallend zijn de ballads met het heerlijke “All for You”, mooi door zijn oprechte eenvoud. Luchtig gitaar werk, maar wel met spanning ook, in “Shut out the lights”, een ongebruikelijk realistische weergave van een huiselijke ruzie, later op de avond.

Het enige punt van kritiek: de CD Get Closer heeft maar 8 tracks, maar het zijn allemaal stuk voor stuk sterke nummers, dat wel. Er is wel een ‘extended version’ uitgegeven, met 3 extra studio opnames, maar die is alleen bij de Target stores te krijgen.

Despite his wheelbarrow full of country music awards, Australian singer-songwriter Keith Urban continues to represent a new Nashville hybrid. His singing has the familiar inflections of the modern male country vocalist, but his attitude skews way more rock `n' roll than the rest of the cowboy hat brigade. On his seventh album, there are hooks enough to keep a pop music fan happy, country power ballads for swooning and a generous helping of electric guitar for crossover rock appeal. It sounds like a calculated marketing exercise on paper, but it all hangs together beautifully in practice. Seldom will you hear a more fully realized track than Urban's current single, "Put You In A Song," a brilliant mix of rock and country strains with polished guitar riffs and a killer chorus. Standout ballads include the lovely "All For You," which works because of its uncluttered simplicity and Urban's convincing vocal. Lightly coiled guitars accentuate the tense undercurrents on "Shut Out The Lights," an unusually realistic look at a late-night domestic argument. One criticism: The standard issue of "Get Closer" only has eight tracks. On the plus side, there's not a dud among them. Like Taylor Swift's recent album, "Get Closer" also comes in an expanded edition available only at Target stores.

Well worth the extra couple of dollars, it contains three extra studio tracks, the best of which is an energetic cover of Russ Ballard's 1970s tune "Winning." In addition, there are four expansive live tracks that reveal the eye-openingly powerful rock `n' roll band that lurks behind Urban's country trappings.
